The presentation will discuss how the Department of Transportation and Public Works (DTPW) leverages land assets to foster economic development, build ridership and produce a revenue stream to help pay for the operation and maintenance of the transit system. The focus of the presentation includes how DTPW partners with the private sector to realize these objectives. Discussions will focus on site selection, market analysis, solicitation of developers, negotiations and development of the project.
About the Speaker - Mr. Albert Hernandez:
For almost 30 years, Albert Hernandez has worked in the transportation-engineering field. In April 2005, Mr. Hernandez joined the Department of Transportation and Public Works (DTPW) as Assistant Director for Engineering, Planning and Development. In this role, Mr. Hernandez is responsible for overseeing the County’s Transit Capital Improvement program and Structural Inspection and Bridge Program. Mr. Hernandez is overseeing the planning and project development of several premium transit corridors under the County’s Strategic Miami Area Rapid Transit (SMART) Plan initiative. Mr. Hernandez recently led the efforts in completing the AirportLink project which involved extending Metrorail from the Earlington Heights station to the Miami Intermodal Center (MIC). The project budget was over $500 million and was completed in 2012 under budget and on schedule. Mr. Hernandez is also aggressively pursuing public private partnerships through Transit Oriented Developments at and near existing and proposed rail and bus stations.
Mr. Hernandez’ previous experience includes serving as the Executive Vice President for a local consulting engineering company, providing project management and design services at the Florida Department of Transportation (District Six), and serving as the Senior Project Manager for the project development of Fort Lauderdale International Airport’s terminal-access roadway interchange project.
Mr. Hernandez received, with honors, a Master’s degree in Business Administration from Florida International University, and graduated Cum Laude from the University of Miami with a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering. He is registered as a professional engineer in Florida and New York. In March of 2007 he received the “Luis P. Saenz” Award (f/k/a the Cuban American Engineer of the Year Award) from the Cuban-American Association of Civil Engineers and in 2016 received “Engineer of the Year” from the Florida Engineering Society (FES) Miami Chapter.
